In the battle to reduce carbon emissions from buildings, the average structural engineer currently plays a secondary role to the architect and services engineer. However this may change as the emerging field of whole-life carbon footprinting offers scope for all engineers to play a vital role in reducing carbon emissions from the built environment. These emissions make up half of the total UK emissions.
