Paul Kavanagh's letter in Verulam (8 January The Structural Engineer) discussed the specification of reinforcement grades. BS 8666 has recently been amended and National Structural Concrete Specification (NSCS) is in the midst of change. Readers should have seen a recent insert from CARES explaining these changes in greater detail. Essentially the rules for designation H have been tightened. BS 8666:2005 designation H allowed Grade A to BS 4449 (lowest ductility), Grade B or Grade C to be supplied. Amendment No. 1 to BS 8666 means that bars greater than 12mm diameter and scheduled as H can no longer be supplied as Grade A. NSCS edition 4 will refer to designation H as the default.
