Good conservation follows the global guiding principles of UNESCO and ICOMOS.rn1. Conservation is best enabled by keeping buildings in use, but not all old buildings merit conservation.rn2. Conservation plans establish why sites are significant, and how that significance will be retained in any future use.rn3. Preference should be given to conservation accredited professionals to prepare conservation plans and act upon their outcomes.rn4. The practicalities of conservation have six tenets; the most important is minimum intervention.rn5. Doing the least to our built heritage requires decisions borne out of a deep understanding of structures; how they were made andrnaltered, how they weaken and decay, and their inherent reserves of strength, stability and integrity.rn6. Resist the temptation to leave your mark on history. Sit on your hands unless it is absolutely necessary to intervene.
