We talk so much about teaching, training, forming 'Engineers'. We talk about status of 'Engineers'. Do we ever address the question of what an engineer is? Let's start with an extreme view. It is something I didn't come across until I was 34.1 know exactly because in 1981 a senior colleague at the University of Dundee (Yes, David Smith to any who knew him) fell ill during the Easter vacation. I had to pick up his teaching at very short notice. That included a Masters level course in Bridge Engineering. Much of the teaching had been done and the exam set, but I had to shoulder the burden of helping students in the run up to the exam.
