摘要

The construction industry worldwide (and certainly in the UK) is being encouraged to make improvements to performance through the implementation of cost, value and carbon reduction objectives at a governmental level. Building Information Modelling (BIM) is essentially a process of designing, constructing or operating an asset within the built environment using object orientated information. It is seen by many as an enabling philosophy to match these governmental objectives, through the reduction of waste and duplication. BIM has significant implications for the industry and members of the Institution; particularly those involved with public sector projects. We are seeking practical examples of projects where BIM has been deployed and is being used by structural engineers - with a focus on the challenges, successes, opportunities and lessons learned - for publication in a special issue of The Structural Engineer. By bringing together examples from different phases of the project lifecycle, across different types and scales of project, we hope to provide a clearer picture of the philosophy, how it is being implemented and the specific implications of its adoption for the structural engineering profession.
