Apart from their size, the thread that links the four huge engineering projects in this book, is the mission of Napoleon to leave a legacy that would match the pyramids of Ancient Egypt. The story, briefly, is this: During Napoleon's invasion of Egypt in 1798 he saw an opportunity to leave his mark on the planet by proposing the idea of a canal linking the Red Sea with the Mediterranean as a means to open up the east to his empire-building ambitions.
