Conference Report: e-Journal Services, Tools, and Standards: An Agent's Perspective

The increasingly important role that vendors and their agents play in assisting libraries with e-journal resources was the focus of an informative presentation entitled "E-Journal Services, Tools, and Standards: An Agent's Perspective," conducted by Oliver Pesch at the workshop "The e-Files: Investigating e-Journal Tools & Trends," held at Mississippi State University on July 8, 2005. Pesch, who is the chief strategist of e-resources for EBSCO Information Services, began his presentation by displaying and discussing a circular model depicting the life cycle of e-resources, consisting of five steps with specific processes: 1. Acquiring (assessing need/budget, trial use, license terms, price, evaluating, ordering, paying, and evaluating); 2. Providing access (IP addresses, registering, proxy servers, cataloging, portals/access lists, campus authentication, and URL maintenance); 3. Administering (user IDs, administrative module information, preferences, holdings lists, access restrictions, viewing rights for use, and claiming). 4. Providing support (troubleshooting/triage, contact information, software needs, hardware needs, and problem log). 5. Evaluating and monitoring (reviewing problems, downtime analysis, usage statistics, and user feedback).
