NATO in Afghanistan: Fighting Together, Fighting Alone

By the end of 2014, NATO forces will have withdrawn from Afghanistan in ambiguous circumstances. David Auerswald's and Stephen Saideman's analysis of NATO's performance in Afghanistan is therefore both timely and potentially important. A substantial literature has appeared on the Afghan campaign and on NATO military transformation in the last decade but, usefully, Auerswald and Saideman are interested not primarily in military adaptation, but in the way in which Alliance politics have influenced the prosecution of the campaign. Specifically, they identify the domestic politics of NATO member states as critical to explaining the subsequent conduct of national task forces.
