Chapter one, entitled "Sources," covers less the sources of argument regarding just war in Islam than an account of the sources of Islam itself, captured in the claim that Islam is the "natural religion of humanity." Bin Laden offers two salient reasons justifying suicide attacks: in a democratic society, those previously deemed innocent by shari 'a reasoning (children, women, the elderly) are fair prey because guilt is shared by all in such a society; and the so-called "law of reciprocity," which boils down to claim that Western civilians are fair prey because "Western" forces have killed Muslim civilians.
