Passenger train travel has grown by four per cent a year since Privatisation and could double over the next 12 years, according to Railtrack. To cope with the predicted boom, the infrastructure provider has unveiled plans to provide not only a safe network but massively improved track and additional capacity. All told, the work would cost a staggering £52 billion - but Railtrack is at pains to point out that the total represents a 'menu' from which the Government and train operators can pick the most appetising contents.
