For twenty years a fleet of HST lookalikes has been running 'Down Under'. ANDREW MIST travels to the other side of the world to find out how they're faring. In the late 1970s, the New South Wales government decided that a new fleet of trains was required to improve public transport in the state. The original idea was to order 40 loco-hauled carriages and 41 high-speed railcars, but early in 1978 Commonwealth Engineering of Granville, New South Wales, tendered an alternative bid based on the British Rail 'Intercity 125' high-speed train, the HST.
