摘要

There are many 'great train journeys' around the world. Some traverse the northern wastes like the Trans-Siberian Railway; others travel through more temperate climates. But only one can take you from the shores of one of the coldest oceans in the world to palm-fringed tropics - 'The Ghan'. The Ghan has been in operation in various forms for 75 years, but only this year has it been possible to travel on it all the way to Darwin, thanks to the construction of 870 miles of railway north from Alice Springs. This new travel experience now runs from Adelaide, where the harbour opens up onto the Great Southern Ocean, through some of the most remote and inhospitable country on earth on a journey stretching 2,979 kilometres (1,850 miles).
