At only 20 years of age, Craig Tiley knows exactly what he wants to do in life and has the talent and determination to achieve his ambition. He is going to be a professional artist-and he's already well on the way. In 1999, aged just 16, he was accepted as an associate member of the Guild of Railway Artists, becoming their youngest-ever member. Then he entered a 'First Great Western' art competition to design a poster to herald the entry into service of the Class 180 'Adelante' DMUs. There were two categories: 17 and under, and over 17 - the overall winner to have their painting used on a poster to be displayed at stations between Paddington and Cardiff. Craig was not only able to enter in the younger category, but produced the overall winning entry with a depiction of one of the new trains speeding through a colourful surreal sky past the Uffington 'white horse'. Then in 2003, his painting of a 9F 2-10-0 in Barry scrapyard (see above) was voted into seventh place by members of the public at the Guild's Kidderminster exhibition, making it the highest-placed painting by an associate member. It is planned to publish this picture at larger size in a forthcoming issue. On top of that, Craig has just learnt that his 'Duchess on Beattock' (see this page) is to be featured on an Isle of Man postage stamp this year.
