A loaded oil train exploded on the main Georgian Railways east-west line in the village of Skra, about 5km west of Gori, on August 24. The electrified line is a vital trade route for oil exports from Azerbaijan to European markets. Emergency services uncoupled 19 tank wagons and moved them away, averting further explosions. Georgian Prime Minister Lado Gurgenidze said: "The railway is vital, not just for the Georgian economy but for the economies of neighbouring countries." The line runs through the capital, Tbilisi, before splitting in three and heading to the Black Sea ports of Poti (occupied by Russian forces well after the signing of the ceasefire), Batumi and southwest towards the Turkish border.
