A major fire in the Channel Tunnel on September 11 closed the Anglo-French rail route for a day-and-a-half and restricted trains to a single bore for the following nine days. The blaze, which broke out on a lorry aboard a shuttle wagon seven miles from the French side, burnt a half-mile section of the north bore and temperatures reached 1,000℃ in the confined space. The lorry is understood to have been carrying phenol, a toxic flammable product.
