By the late-1980s, almost everything that could be done to preserve main line steam had been done. Motion, driving wheels and even cylinders had been manufactured to bring former Barry scrapyard wrecks back to life, culminating in the remarkable restoration of Standard 8P Pacific No. 71000 Duke of Gloucester -the original 'project impossible'.
