With its air-brake pump slowly throbbing, 24IP30 seemed immense that hot summer's day in 1966 at Nantes, gateway to Brittany. The largest locomotive I had ever seen, the Le Mans-based 4-8-2 was waiting to take over the 07.25 Bordeaux-Quimper from a diesel and would soon be striding westwards into the Cornwall of France with its granite outcrops and Celtic heritage.
