In order to understand the relative qualities of the many locomotive types it had inherited overnight, the Railway Executive took the bold decision to stage a series of proving trials, the idea being to ascertain 'best practice' and obtain information that would be useful to chief mechanical engineer Robert Riddles in the design of a new fleet of steam locos.
