Gas attack tests on the Underground Tests are being carried out on London Underground to see how quickly poison gas could spread through tunnels and stations. The aim is to help emergency services cope with a terrorist attack. The tests involve releasing non-hazardous materials over several days at a dozen stations in central London, then monitoring the spread using detection equipment on platforms. Transport for London said passengers should not be able to see, smell or taste the test gases. There was a smaller scale trial at St John's Wood station in 2007.
