Biomass charge dropped as first wagons are built FREIGHT operators have won their battle against the threatened introduction of a surcharge on the transport of biomass. The levy had been proposed by the Office of Rail Regulation (RW June). Biomass is being burned in an increasing number of British power stations instead of coal. The first purpose-built biomass wagon is to be unveiled at the NRM in York on July 25. The wagon has been designed by Lloyd's Register Rail and built in Britain by W H Davis. It is the first of 200 commissioned by Drax power station.
