THE German government cut VAT charged on rail fares for journeys longer than 50km from 19% to 7% from January 1. The cut is part of a package of measures, including increased rail investment, to reduce carbon emissions, and is aiming to incentivise more people to use trains rather than driving or flying especially for domestic journeys. Shorter distance rail journeys were already taxed at the lower rate.
