Australian physicists are not alone in being seriously concerned for the future of Basic Science. The following item is reprinted from the American Institute of Physics Bulletin of Science Policy News, Number 101 June 26 1996. Although specifically addressed to the American problems, many of the points are applicable to Australia and indeed to any country whose government does not fully appreciate that the future well being of the country depends on adequate support for science.
