Encouraging quality first year students to major in physics

The research reported in this paper was inspired by the urge to encourage higher achieveing students to major in Physics. High ability students from two first year Physics groups participated in the study. Students from one group were placed in a small Group situation, provided greater individual atten- Tion and taught at an advanced level to produce a More positive attitude and to encourage them to Major in Physics. Students in the other group, used As a control, underwent the course in the usual lec- Ture-tutorial system. The feelings and attitudes of the Two groups towards the first year Physics course are Reported. It was found that the experimental group Students were more disposed to continue in physics.
