China's first carrier handed over

China's first aircraft carrier, Liaoning, was handed over to the People's Liberation Army (Navy) on 23 September 2012, state press said. The handover ceremony of the former Soviet carrier took place in Dalian after a lengthy refit. In November 2012, an aircraft successfully landed on the carrier for the first time. State television showed a J-15 fighter aircraft land on the deck of the carrier, although it will be several years before the PLAN can operate a carrier air wing.
