Scottish Enterprise, Subsea UK and representatives from the offshore industry have pooled together to create a new not-for-profit research group, which will operate under the title of the National Subsea Research Institute (NSRI). The NSRI's primary focus will be on the development of subsea oil and gas technologies within the UK, and the body intends to act as "a conduit of knowledge transfer between industry and academia". The NSRI was reportedly birthed in response to subsea developments in Norway and Brazil; both countries' offshore sectors have pumped substantial amounts of money into subsea R&D and investment, outpacing the UK for a number of years.
