SAL Heavy Lift has introduced the first of its new Type 116 heavy lift vessels, in the form of Calypso and Amoenitas. Complementing its existing Type 161, 176 and 183 units (which feature lifting capacities of 700tonnes, l,400tonnes and 2,000tonnes respectively - see Offshore Marine Technology Q2 2014, pages 14-15), the Type 116 has been developed to serve customers with a lifting requirement of up to 900tonnes. This new class has been introduced primarily to satisfy "urgent or short-notice customer requests", says Lars Rolner, SAL Heavy Lift managing director, as the Type 176 and 183 units are typically in such high demand, they need to be booked months in advance.
