Irish Naval Service to have three new OPVs

The first of what was originally intended as a class of two OPVs being built by Babcock for the Irish Naval Service was officially named and commissioned on 17 May 2014, following successful completion of sea trials and handover at Babcock's Appledore shipyard in North Devon at the end of April 2014. The vessel was laid down in May 2012 and floated up in November 2013. Shortly after the first vessel was commissioned, the Irish Naval Service also confirmed that it had placed an order for a third example of the type. The vessels are based on STX Marine's PV 90 design, which is a lengthened variant of the PV 80, which forms the basis of the Irish Naval Service's Roisin-class OPVs.
