Within a space of some 39 years, Korea's shipbuilding industry has risen from virtually nothing to become one of the mightiest in the world, at the very top alongside or perhaps even above Japan, but today, like Japan, being increasingly challenged - as is Japan - by a rising industry in China. Korea's own industry is characterised by its small number of yards, the majority of which are huge; one of these at the very top is certainly Samsung Heavy Industries. From starting life as a modest repair yard, this company's Geoje (Koje) Island shipyard is today one of the most extensive in the world; the awe-inspiring site is still being modified and expanded to meeting changing market conditions.
