Dual-fuel diesel-electric drive: efficient power for LNG tankers

An efficient and environment-friendly alternative is proposed by Waertsilae, the company which has already installed a prototype plant in Gaz de France's new 74,100m~3 ship at Chantiers de I'Atlantique, with two more to follow at the same yard. Over the past four decades, LNG carrier propulsion and power generation has been dominated by steam turbine installations. Their apparent reliability and the ease with which these installations can burn boil-off gas have kept them in a position that has long been lost to diesel engine installations inall other segments of the shipping industry.
