  Rita Steblin earned degrees in musicology at the Universities of British Columbia Toronto and Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (PhD 1981). She also studied harpsichord with Isolde Ahlgrimm at the Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna. Her dissertation “A History of Key Characteristics in the Eighteenth and Early Nineteenth Centuries” 2nd ed. was published by the University of Rochester Press in 2002. Other publications include articles in Canadian American British French German Swiss Italian and Austrian musicology journals and the volume Die Unsinnsgesellschaft: Franz Schubert Leopold Kupelwieser und ihr Freundeskreis (Böhlau 1998). Since 1991 she has worked full-time on research in Vienna's archives concentrating mainly on Beethoven and Schubert iconography and biography. She currently holds a two-year grant to research Viennese music instrument makers of the Mozart era;
