Tognum grows with gas turbines

Tognum's subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen and Vericor Power Systems, based in Georgia, USA, recently signed a new contract to run until 2012 for the supply of gas turbines to be used in complete MTU marine propulsion systems. The existing contract for a period of two years has thus been extended to five years.rnThe TF 50 gas turbines deliver a power output of 4,118 kW (5,600 hp) and will be used in combination with MTU diesel engines and MTU marine electronics as complete propulsion systems in ships with the main applications in yachts and fast ferries. A recent example is the 150-foot megayacht Detroit Eagle which has a combined diesel and gas propulsion system (CODAG) equipped with two MTU 16V 4000 M90 engines of 3,650 hp (2,684 kW) each, plus a 5,600 hp Vericor TF50 gas turbine. Flat out, the 12,900 hp (9,485 kW) vessel boasts a top speed of up to 35 knots.
