To present-day thinking it seems rather strange that the marine diesel engine should have been born in two landlocked locations, both of which continue to play an important part in its development. Augsburg in Germany and Winterthur in Switzerland are a long distance from the sea, yet both can still consider themselves as joint capitals of the large engine industry - nowadays Augsburg for the four-strokes and Winterthur for two strokes. Of course, the licensing system means that two-stroke engines are mostly built in the same locations as the ships they are to power, and nowadays that means that most engine building takes place in the Far East. But the engines still need design and development - particularly under the current ever-increasing demands for more efficiency and lower emissions. And that is where Winterthur comes into the picture.
