China's armed forces showcased the progress of their accelerating modernisation drive at the 6oth anniversary celebrations of their air force and navy, and of the People's Republic itself. Through a series of carefully scripted parades and large-scale exercises, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) sent notice that it was generating a comprehensive set of state-of-the-art capabilities that would enable the projection of its military power onto the global stage.
