Mali - what sort of intervention?

In late 2012, initiatives to intervene in Mali gained traction, given continued international and regional preoccupation that the security crisis in Mali could constitute a regional or even international threat. It was compounded by fears that terrorist groups could further secure their current foothold in the ungoverned space of Mali's north. 12 October saw the UN Security Council pass a resolution requiring ECOWAS, the AU and other partners to submit a detailed plan for the deployment of a military mission within 45 days.
