You reap what you sow, so the saying goes, and that is entirely true of the design and maintenance processes. Many the issues discussed in these two articles will probably be well known, but the exact way we do things is often taken for granted. Going 'back to basics' and thinking about those that follow with their maintenance operations, will ensure a lower cost of ownership and cheaper operating costs, leading to longer service life and improved end-user satisfaction.
