GOING UNDERGROUND

Road tunnel lighting has a perceived mystique to it, especially surrounding the specific requirements and how to meet them because of the various lighting zones and levels.The lighting installation within a road tunnel is designed to enable drivers to enter, pass through and exit the structure in comfort and safety without changing speed or course. To achieve this during the day and at night, the lighting levels within the structure must consider the ambient lighting on the approach.Another significant issue to be conscious of is that, in the event of an incident within a tunnel, the implications can be significantly more serious than the same incident occurring on the open road. So much so that life-threatening scenarios can develop very quickly within a tunnel, especially in the event of fire.This article therefore aims to present a snapshot of some of the issues and challenges encountered for the lighting designer.
