A new study panel on fibre optics has been convened under the chairmanship of David Burton. Work has recently started on traffic calming under Jim Palmer. The panel under Jon West on security lighting is looking at PIR switched floodlighting. The computers panel under Jim Paterson is looking at software verification at the request of BSI. The report on pedestrian crossings from John Sharman's group is nearing completion. A second draft from Phil Edward's cycleways panel is almost ready. Clive Lane's column report is published: Contrary to the views occasionally expressed, all lighting columns will deteriorate and will require inspection, maintenance and replacement. Obviously, the life of the column, the frequency of maintenance and the type of inspection will vary according to the location, use, design and materials of the column in question.
