Full Steam Ahead into the New Millennium

In his regular quarterly address, Malcolm Shirley, the Director General of the Engineering Council reports on the state of the profession as we head towards the third Millennium. As we enter the year leading to the end of this Millennium, there is a lot of good news for the Engineering profession, which made considerable progress during 1998. Among the many significant developments, we have seen the creation of the Institution of Incorporated Engineers (IIE), now established as the largest Incorporated Engineering Institution. The IIE is working hard in conjunction with its fellow Institutions and the Engineering Council to promote the qualification of Incorporated Engineer as a significant and important professional engineering standard. We are starting to persuade both academia and industry of the importance of the Incorporated Engineer to the future of the profession, but there is still much work to do.
