Since light emitting diodes first burst on to the scene, industry has been holding its breath for someone to come up with white lamps, suitable for domestic lighting and torches. The breakthrough arrived recently, courtesy of Japanese company Nichia's technology, which combined phosphorous with a blue LED to create a white light. With that on the market, Iain Sinclair's eponymously named industrial design company was determined to be the first to make a flat torch using white LEDs.
