Research project has layered approach Collaboration to develop ALM for mass producing aircraft components

EADS and GKN have launched a research project to develop additive layer manufacturing (ALM) for mass producing aircraft parts. The collaboration, which is supported by a £2m government grant, is an attempt to industrialise ALM technology, taking it from a method of creating prototype and one-off components to a final product manufacturing process. The project will be based in a new shared facility near the organisations' existing bases in Filton, Bristol, where the scheme was announced on 12 April. It is expected to create up to 30 new engineering jobs and help develop a new supply chain for ALM technology in the southwest and beyond.
