In your comment ('Energy generation is a "risky" business', The Engineer 14 May) you say, as you have said many times, that 'nuclear has to be a major component of any credible low-carbon energy mix'. I find this a very difficult idea to understand. While our 16 reactors currently supply about one-sixth of our electricity, looking at our total energy demand, all of which will have to be decarbonised, this factor falls by a factor of eight, to slightly more than two per cent of our present total energy demand.
