In a settlement that resolves a six-year legal dispute, the state of Idaho and the Energy Department announced Tuesday they have agreed on a plan for the disposal of tons of plutonium and other radioactive waste from a vast landfill at the Idaho National Laboratory.rnThe agreement, announced in Boise by Idaho Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter (R) and DOE Assistant Secretary for Environmental Management James Rispoli, implements a 2006 federal court order that requires DOE to remove all the radioactive and toxic waste in portions of the laboratory's sprawling Subsurface Disposal Area, which since 1952 has received a wide variety of wastes from past nuclear weapons operations at the Idaho site as well as DOE's Rocky Flats plutonium site in Colorado.
