A central resource management office is urgently needed to tackle the economic threat from a pending raw material crunch, according to trade bodies representing the manufacturing, glass, plastics, steel, paper and packaging sectors. This is the main plea in a strongly worded letter sent to the environment and business secretaries on 20 August. It warns of significant consequences for UK industry unless Whitehall's strategy to keep raw materials circulating in the economy is improved. Friends of the Earth, which also signed the letter, criticised the government's "incoherent" approach to resources. The government stepped up its efforts on resource security this year, publishing a resource security action plan in February (ENDS Report 446, p 37) and launching a Circular Economy Task Force in July (ENDS Report 450, p 19).
