Five things you need to know about... THE BASEL CONVENTION

Under amendments to the Basel Convention, which came into force on 1 January, operators must apply for prior consent to export certain plastics to non-OECD countries. In December, the Environment Agency (EA) said it had not received as many applications for prior consent as it would expect and urged exporters to apply. Plastic recyclers warned this would lead to "a glut of plastic stockpiling in the UK" in January and February, pushing down the market price and package recovery note value. The EA has introduced a regulatory position statement allowing waste firms to temporarily exceed their limits for storing waste plastic because of disruption caused by the Basel amendments.
