Highways England is to create nearly nine hectares of habitat of significant biodiversity value to replace almost 5ha of habitat that would be lost as a result of a junction improvement scheme in the north-east, the project's environmental statement reveals. The agency responsible for England's major roads is seeking approval for its plans to upgrade the A19 Downhill Lane junction with the A1290, on the boundary of South Tyneside Council and Sunderland City Council, via the fast-track Planning Act 2008 regime. The upgrade is needed as future developments planned for the area will increase traffic at the junction, Highways England says.
