A £975,000 enforcement undertaking agreed recently by Wessex Water set a new high for a civil sanction payout. The sum, 50% more than the previous record, came on top of a £25,000 compensation payment and undisclosed costs paid to the Environment Agency (EA). The payout was in response to a series of untreated sewage discharges into Swa-nage Bay between 2016 and 2017, which occurred because a treatment plant did not have enough stormwater storage.
