The rapid growth and expansion of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in China's reform era has driven both Western and Chinese scholars to seek a more appropriate analytical framework to understand this phenomenon. Based on the analyses of some 40 cases of NGOs and their interactions with the state, the author aims to reach a "deeper understanding of the nature and functions of Chinese NGOs" by developing the concept of dependent autonomy.
