摘要

I write in response to the comment on John Sorrell's recent speech at Tate Modern (AJ 19.11.09). As the first chairman of CABE, one of my early duties was to initiate conversations with the RIBA and to work with it. At that time there was great concern about the quality of private finance initiative (PFI) design by architects. No architects resigned their PFI commissions then - they all took the money. If the RIBA is to have a moral backbone it should stand for something. Architects must decide if they are going to help to ensure that all design in this country is worthwhile, otherwise we will end up with a situation where only experienced clients and architects are in a position to take the high ground and resign from a job if it is destined to be a bad building.
