We wanted the elements of the staircase to have simple unjointed surfaces. The core element is a curved balustrade, extending from ground-floor to first-floor level. This was formed from a single 20mm-thick aluminium sheet. The balustrade was powder coated and then brought to site at an early stage in the project, while access was still possible. Using 40 × 40 steel angle connections, the balustrade is fixed to the steel tread plates, which project from a 15mm-thick steel plate, anchor-fixed to the masonry wall. The wall and soffit are clad with 'stuff, a form of lime finishing plaster, using a framework of metal studs and leaving a zone between the stuff and the masonry for services.
