Battleships Of the potential obstacles to Gensler's floating island airport proposal, the most explosive is the SS Richard Montgomery. The ship, which sank in the Thames Estuary in August 1944 a couple of miles from Southend, is loaded with 1,500 tons of munitions that can significantly damage the Kent coast and any airport in the estuary. A public meeting, entitled A disaster waiting to happen', in Chatham tonight (27 September) will discuss the wreck's effect on Kent and the airport proposals.
